They Glowed in the Dark. Then Their Bones Began to Fail.
Young women painted luminous watch dials with radium. They were repeatedly told it was safe. Their bodies proved otherwise.

They left the factory glowing in the dark.
Not because the story sounds better that way. Not because it makes for a poetic image. Their dresses, hair and hands really did carry a faint light after work.
At the time, people laughed. It felt modern. It looked almost like magic.
The problem was that the light came from radium. And the radium was killing them from the inside.
A modern, precise job that almost looked enviable
At the beginning of the twentieth century, radium was a source of fascination.
Marie and Pierre Curie had announced their discovery in 1898. The element glowed, intrigued scientists and opened genuine medical possibilities. As so often happens when a spectacular discovery appears, serious science and utter nonsense soon began travelling together.
Radium became a selling point. It appeared in beauty products, supposedly invigorating drinks and all kinds of remedies. The idea sounds deranged today. At the time, it came wrapped in a very persuasive word: progress.
In 1917, the Radium Luminous Material Corporation opened a factory in Orange, New Jersey, producing luminous paint. Mixed with zinc sulfide, radium kept dials readable in the dark. It was useful to soldiers and civilians alike. It was also extremely marketable.
The workshops employed mostly young women. The work required a steady hand and extraordinary precision. It even paid better than many of the other jobs then available to women.
On paper, it looked like an opportunity. But paper, as it happens, can lie with remarkable elegance.
The gesture that condemned them
To paint the tiny numbers neatly, the workers used extremely fine brushes.
The bristles flattened and spread, however. So the women were taught a simple technique: place the tip between their lips to bring it back to a point.
Dip. Paint. Lips. Dip. Paint. Lips.
All day long.
The gesture looked harmless. Yet every time they repeated it, a little radium entered their mouths. And they repeated it hundreds of times.
The American archives are unambiguous on one point: the women were assured that the paint was safe and that the radium would simply pass through their bodies.
When the light stays inside the body
Radium does not politely disappear after it is swallowed.
Its trap lies in its chemical resemblance to calcium. The body can incorporate it into bone. Once lodged there, the element continues irradiating the surrounding tissue.
The first signs often appeared in the mouth: persistent pain, damaged teeth and bleeding gums. Then came jaw necrosis, anaemia, exhaustion and bones that broke with abnormal ease.
Put simply, their own skeletons became a source of radiation.
The delay made it all the more insidious. The illness did not necessarily strike on the factory floor. It arrived later, after the wages had been paid, the dials delivered and those responsible had moved far away from the everyday gesture.
Decades later, during the clean-up of a former factory site, some of the company’s own paper records were found to be radioactive. They had to be digitised before they could be destroyed.
The company had no intention of surrendering
By the 1920s, the link between dial painting and the workers’ illnesses was becoming increasingly difficult to deny. But admitting the danger also meant accepting responsibility, paying for treatment and opening the door to lawsuits.
The former workers therefore had to fight while already seriously ill. Grace Fryer searched for nearly two years before finding a lawyer willing to take on the company.
Together with Katherine Schaub, Edna Hussman, Albina Larice and Quinta McDonald, she finally obtained a settlement in 1928. Each woman received compensation, an annual pension and medical expenses under certain conditions.
The company did not admit liability. Most dial painters received no compensation at all.
What they forced the world to see
The story of the Radium Girls is not only a story about science. It is about blind fascination with a new technology. It is about industrial work in which the people handling the product bear the risk while the rewards flow elsewhere.
The Radium Girls became symbols because they forced institutions to look at what they would rather not see. Their struggle helped change workplace safety and the recognition of occupational disease.
When an industry keeps saying “don’t worry,” that is not always a reason to panic. But it is an excellent reason to ask for the evidence.
